 Many people are familiar with this scene: an outdoor gathering, a warm and peaceful evening, and by the end of the get-together, one person has accumulated almost all the mosquito bites, while everyone else barely notices them. It doesn’t matter if repellent was used, if long clothing was worn, or if contact with grass was avoided. The feeling is clear: mosquitoes seem to have a very strong preference. Far from being a coincidence, this phenomenon has an explanation based on biology, body chemistry, and certain environmental factors that have a greater influence than many realize.

Mosquitoes don’t act randomly. Females, in particular, which are the ones that bite, need to feed on blood to complete their reproductive cycle. To achieve this, they’ve developed a highly sophisticated detection system that allows them to identify their ideal targets. In this process, the human body emits signals that function like a GPS for these insects.


One of the most determining factors is carbon dioxide. Every time we breathe, we release CO₂, and mosquitoes are extremely sensitive to this gas. People with greater body mass, greater height, or who engage in physical activity tend to emit higher amounts, making them more visible. Body heat is another key signal that guides mosquitoes to their food source.

Natural body odor also plays a central role. Human skin harbors millions of bacteria that produce specific chemical compounds. This combination is unique to each person and defines a particular scent. For mosquitoes, some of these odors are especially attractive. It’s not about dirt or hygiene, but a biological characteristic that makes certain individuals a better choice for their “food.”

Blood type is another factor that influences mosquito behavior. Scientific studies have shown that mosquitoes are more attracted to people with type O blood, while those with type A tend to be bitten less. Furthermore, some people release chemical signals through their skin that allow insects to identify their blood type more easily.
Sweat and lactic acid explain why mosquitoes appear more frequently after exercise. When we move, our bodies produce these substances, which are released through our pores and combine with the increased temperature. For mosquitoes, this combination is irresistible and makes it easier for them to locate their host.

Clothing is also an important factor. Mosquitoes perceive contrasts better and are usually attracted to dark colors like black, blue, or red. In contrast, light colors tend to be less noticeable. Thus, the choice of clothing can significantly influence the number of bites received.

Alcohol consumption also plays a role. Several studies suggest that drinking can increase mosquito attraction, either due to increased body heat or compounds produced during alcohol metabolism. Hormonal changes have a similar effect. Pregnancy, menstruation, or stressful situations alter body odor, and in some cases, make a person more attractive to these insects.

Perfumes and skincare products can intensify this effect. Floral or fruity fragrances mimic natural scents that mosquitoes associate with food. Certain cosmetics even alter the skin’s pH, enhancing the natural scent without the wearer noticing.

However, there is one factor that cannot be changed: genetics. It is estimated that between 60% and 70% of a person’s attraction to mosquitoes is determined by their DNA. This is the origin of the feeling of carrying a kind of “curse,” although in reality it is an inherited combination of biological characteristics.



Climate and geographic location also play a role. Mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid environments, and their activity is highest at dawn and dusk. Living near water or in tropical regions inevitably increases exposure.

While you can’t change biology, you can reduce the risk. Using effective repellents, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, and eliminating standing water help minimize bites. Understanding these reasons allows you to stop thinking it’s just bad luck. In reality, being a “mosquito’s favorite” isn’t personal, but rather a reflection of the natural environment.
